Biological Treatment for Cholesterol Issues and Heart and Blood vessel Diseases - An Alternative Method to the Use of Drugs.

2/18/2015

The causes and consequences of having too much (and the wrong kinds of) cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood are totally correctable through changes in diet, exercise and the use of nutritional supplements. As in all medical conditions the basis of treatment must be the improvement of mitochondrial function and restoring the gastrointestinal microbiome. The following list of natural medicines will allow you to balance the fats in your blood without statins and other drugs.

1) Fish Oil Extract: 82% EPA/DHA in the triglyceride form

PictureFish Oil Extract: (EPA/DHA)
Our brand of fish oil is the most concentrated and pure available on the world market. Just as importantly, the fatty acids in this product are in the triglyceride form which is been shown to be the most bioavailable form and the most effective product available. Each capsule of 1000 mg contains 820 mg of EPA and DHA. These substances are a major component of all cell membranes of the body especially the brain and are converted into hormones known as prostaglandins. When we have the proper ratios and forms of the Omega-3 and Omega-6 families of fatty acids, we are able to have a balanced prostaglandins system which results in normalization of blood fats, blood pressure, blood viscosity and level of inflammation in the system. In some cases special extracts of fish oil with a high concentration of either EPA or DHA are needed. This is based on the particular condition of the patient and the results of the red blood cell fatty acid profile.

2) Time Release Niacin

Picture
This is a form of vitamin B3 and has been used for over 40 years to lower total cholesterol and raise HDL ("good cholesterol") levels. The dose needs to be worked up to 2000 mg per day. Even though our niacin is a time released product the patient may still experience the side effects of niacin – Flushing, itching and redness of the skin. It can terrify the patient but it is a perfectly benign, self-limiting reaction. The side effect, when it does occur, gradually subsides upon continuing to take the niacin.

3) Berberine

Picture

This plant pigment is founded a number of plants and has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation in the vascular tree and, as a bonus, induce apoptosis (the death program) in cancer cells.  The therapeutic dose is 500 mg twice daily.

4) PhosChol PPC: Polyenylphosphatidylcholine

Picture

This special fraction of phosphatidyl choline from Nattermann Company in Germany has over 1000 scientific articles documenting its action and efficacy in ameliorating many conditions. These include protecting and repairing the liver during viral infection or toxic damage, reduction of arterial plaque, helping skin disorders including psoriasis, improving mental problems from dementia to multiple sclerosis, reversing kidney disorders and improving mood and well-being. How could it be useful for so many issues? It is a phospholipid and these substances are key components of the membranes of all cells. This product is pharmaceutical grade and is even available for intravenous injection. It consists of the active biotherapeutic fraction known as polyenylphosphatidyl choline and 1,2 dilinoleoylphosphatidyl choline. There is no remotely comparable product available. The oral dose is one 900 mg capsule three times daily.

5) Tocotrieneols

Picture

These long-chain versions of vitamin E protect LDL particles from oxidative damage by free radicals. LDL cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease – the damage to these important carriers of cholesterol and other fats are the real cause. Dose is 100 mg twice daily.

6) Phytosterols

Picture

These molecules are basically cholesterol-like substances found in the oily fraction of plant tissues. They compete with cholesterol for absorption and more importantly, they enhance bile acid production by the liver which protects against fatty liver. In addition normalization of the circulation of fats and various toxic substances between the small intestines and the liver (called the Enterhepatic Circulation) is a key mechanism for enhancing health at many levels. Doses of 1 to 3 grams per day have been shown to lower blood fats.

7) Mucopolysaccharide Concentrate

Picture
This product contains the building blocks of connective tissue derived from animal collagen. These substances have been shown to actually reverse atherosclerosis of the arteries. In addition, they have anti-inflammatory effects and make blood cells less sticky and thus less prone to clots. The very ground state of ourselves tissues and organs are constructed from these molecules. The dose is 3 to 6 capsules daily.

8) Polycosanol

Picture
This waxy alcohol is derived from sugarcane processing and has been shown to reduce production of both triglycerides and cholesterol in the liver. The dose is 20 mg once daily

9) Bioflavinoids: Curcumin, Quercetin, Polyresveratrol, Plantioxidants

Picture

Mixtures of bioflavonoids and polyphenols found in the products Polyresveratrol and Plantioxidants all have been shown to inhibit free radical damage to tissues including blood vessels, brain cells and heart cells. These will be prescribed when needed based on the Cleveland Heart Lab test results which measure oxidation products and levels of inflammatory enzymes in the blood.

Mitochondrial Resuscitation ~ Fatigue and what to do about it

2/2/2015

Picture
Fatigue is probably the most common complaint people bring to their doctor – along with pain to which it is related. Fatigue is caused by reduced function of the tiny furnaces and ourselves in which we make energy for life's processes, the mitochondria. Loss of the ability to make sufficient energy is at the basis of all disease.

The following substances are key components of these systems. Use of these nutrients is called "mitochondrial resuscitation". We will refer to these nutrients again as part of the treatment program for many conditions.

The following five nutrients will be used in cases of chronic fatigue syndrome/fibromyalgia, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, depression, cancer and chronic infections:

1.  Coenzyme Q 10 - This vitamin like molecule is part of the chain of enzymes through which electrons flow to ultimately make the energy of life – ATP. A Q10 blood level can be drawn to know the extent of your deficiency.

2.  Acetyl-L-Carnitine – This amino acid is needed to transfer fats into the mitochondrial furnaces so that they can be burned to make heat and energy. It is no coincidence that people who suffer from fatigue also are often cold all the time. We are only warm-blooded because 60% of the fuel we burn is turned into heat.

3.  Magnesium – This mineral activates 80% of the enzymes in our body and is a key component of the mitochondrial enzyme which produces cellular energy in the form of ATP. We and others have published scientific papers proving that almost every person is deficient.

4.  D- Ribose – This sugar is a building block of our genetic material (DNA and RNA).  D-Ribose is also a component of the ultimate energetic substance in our cells – ATP. It has been shown to improve heart function in patients with congestive heart failure and cardiomyopathy. Patients with chronic fatigue syndrome have also been shown to benefit from the substance.

5.  Alpha Lipoic Acid – This B vitamin like molecule neutralizes the free radicals generated in the mitochondria, recycles other antioxidants and chelates heavy metals. It is been shown to benefit people with diabetic neuropathy, fatigue, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory disorders and mercury poisoning.

These five are the most important of the nutrients which function in energy production in the mitochondria but other vital substances are also needed. These include hormones such as hydrocortisone and the active thyroid hormone T3. As in all conditions, the total picture of the individual patient must be considered. Corrections of diet, digestive functions, hormone balance, fatty acid, vitamin and mineral deficiencies must all be addressed. In addition detoxification of heavy metals and iron overload (chelation, phlebotomy) and other poisons (sauna) is also important as is the identification and treatment of infections (Lyme, mycoplasmas, hidden viruses, Candidiasis etc.).

Other naturally occurring molecules are often needed. These include DHEA, 7-keto DHEA, Pregnenalone, Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone and high doses of Riboflavin (Vit-B2) and niacinamide (Vit-B3), Oxaloacetic Acid (Benegene™) can be used to activate the Krebs Cycle and a special fat soluble form of thiamine (Vit-B1) called Allithiamine activates the rate limiting enzyme in the conversion of food to energy in the mitochondrion: Pyruvate dehydrogenase (also known as "The Pyruvate Enzyme" because it is so important).

Finally, even with a change of diet, correction of the microbiome and digestion, sometimes the mitochondria won't get into gear and start pouring out energy. In those cases we have to apply various intravenous therapies including oxidative therapies to jump start the mitochondria and kill the chronic infections that are jamming up the systems.

Is it a Cold or a Winter Allergy?

1/26/2015

Picture
If you find yourself struggling with the sniffles and chronic congestion this time of year, it might seem like the inevitable start of cold and flu season. But just as likely, if it’s an ongoing issue, the culprit could be allergies.

For allergy sufferers, winter can mean miserable days and nights due to indoor sensitivities to dust mites, molds and other household and environmental triggers.  Dr. Waters says that fall and winter allergies can “sneak up and begin having their effects before you realize you’re allergic.”

Winter time is especially troublesome for people who suffer from indoor and environmental allergies.  “This is when we tend to close up and seal our homes tightly against the cold temperatures outdoors,” says Dr. Waters.  While this may help the fuel budget, it can contribute to many problems associated with indoor allergy symptoms. When we turn on our furnaces, we blast airborne dust, fabric fiber, bacteria, food material and animal dander throughout our homes. Add to that wood-burning fireplaces, holiday greenery and other typical winter comforts, and you’ll soon see allergies exacerbated even further. “We tend to see three common allergens affecting allergy sufferers: house dust mites, indoor molds and animal dander. These get worse in winter when ventilation is inferior,” adds Dr. Waters.

How do you tell the difference between a cold and sinusitis? Cold symptoms typically build then slowly disappear. Symptoms can include nasal congestion, runny nose, headache, achiness and fatigue. Sinusitis can exhibit similar symptoms that tend to linger longer, and is often accompanied by pressure or pain around the face and eyes, headache in the forehead area, thick, yellow nasal discharge, post-nasal drip and congestion.

Recent research from the Mayo Clinic cites that mold allergies are at the root of as much as 80% of sinusitis cases. The allergy can cause inflammation of the sinus channel, which blocks sinus drainage and leads to infection. Without addressing the underlying allergic cause of the problem, sinus issues can recur indefinitely.

“Many people who have recurrent sinus problems can benefit from allergy drops to treat the underlying allergy,” notes Dr. Waters. “For those with chronic issues, it could prevent the need for sinus surgery when allergy is the underlying cause.”

Adrenal Insufficiency (fatigue coming from weak adrenal glands)

1/21/2015

Picture
The human adrenal glands are located on top of each of our kidneys. They produce a variety of hormones that bind to our genes and cause them to be activated. There are three types of hormones secreted from the three layers of these adrenal glands. The first layer makes glucocorticoids, steroid hormones that regulate the blood sugar; the next layer makes mineralocorticoids mainly aldosterone, steroids which regulate salt and water balance in the body; the third layer makes sex hormones such as DHEA and testosterone. In the inner core of the adrenal glands is located a tissue known as the medulla, it produces the namesake of the adrenal glands namely adrenalin.

1)     Glucocorticoids (Cortisol) – blood sugar regulation
2)     Mineralocorticoids (Aldosterone) – salt and water balance
3)     Sex hormones – DHEA, testosterone

Picture
When these glands are weak the patient experiences fatigue. This fatigue generally becomes worse as the day wears on and patience with this problem frequently need a nap after lunch. Another prominent symptom is the patient is always thirsty but never seems to retain enough water. This results in low blood pressure and another prominent symptom is thus a condition called “orthostatic hypotension"– the person becomes faint when they get up quickly from a seated position. These patients cannot withstand stress and are easily overwhelmed. They report having difficulty fending off infections. They seem to "catch" every cold that comes around. Besides fatigue the most prominent symptom they report is becoming weak and shaky if they don't eat their meals on a timely basis. This is because their blood sugar falls to levels that their brain cannot operate properly. They forget things. When asked if they have "brain fog", they invariably say "Yes". They report needing a lot of sleep but their sleep doesn't make them feel rested in the morning. They feel like they could sleep another eight hours. Of course because of the biochemical and hormonal derangements they experience they are often depressed and anxious. In fact one reason why they are depressed is that generally they have been to a number of doctors, including endocrinologists, and have been told there is nothing wrong with them and they need antidepressant drugs! This whole story might be familiar to you or to someone you know and care about.

Symptoms of adrenal insufficiency: ·
  • Fatigue – specifically in the afternoon
  • Dizziness upon standing
  • Poor stress tolerance
  • Brain fog
  • Anxiety and/or depression

Diet and Hormone Imbalance

Diet is particularly important in these patients. Digestive issues must be addressed, as well as getting their mitochondria to make energy again. But in this special case of a fatigue syndrome it is usually necessary to use low dose, bio-identical hormones to support the body while it heals. The two hormones we use to accomplish this are hydrocortisone (also known as cortisol) and DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone). These hormones help your body provide energy and give resilience against stress. In addition to this basic approach there are a number of nutritional supplements that can help the patient recover from this dysfunction.

Low dose bio-identical hormones:
  • Hydrocortisone (cortisol)
  • DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone)

Adrenal Support

Picture
Adrenal Advantage – A mixture of adrenal gland extract, licorice, and a number of vitamins known to support adrenal gland chemistry. Dose: One with breakfast and one with lunch. More can be used as desired

ACE Control – A pure and highly concentrated adrenal gland extract.  This is used to nourish the adrenal glands back to health and reverse autoimmune attacks against the adrenals (oral tolerance). Dose:  1 to 4 daily.

Pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5) – This vitamin forms the basic structure of Acetyl Coenzyme A, the molecule that carries the fragments of glucose and fat in to the chemical cycles to be burned for energy.  Dose: 500 mg. Two or three times daily.

Blood Sugar Support:

Picture
As indicated above, one of the main issues for people with adrenal insufficiency is blood sugar regulation. Specific nutrients to try for this include:

Chromium Picolinate – This mineral is part of the glucose tolerance factor (GTF) which is needed for proper binding of insulin with the insulin receptor on the cell surface. Both diabetics and hypoglycemic patients benefit from this mineral. Dose:  500 µg to two for daily.

Cinnamon – this polyphenol contained within cinnamon tree bark also makes insulin work more effectively. Our colleague Dr. Richard Anderson of the USDA has shown that in addition to its effect on regulating blood sugar, it also breaks up Tau proteins in the brain cells of Alzheimer's patients. The dose has been shown in both animal and human experiments to be 1 g( 1000 µg) three times a day.

Lithium Orotate – there is evidence that this metal helps regulate blood sugar and also encourages growth of new brain cells. As a result it helps people with depression and degenerative brain diseases (Parkinson's disease, dementia, M.S. et al.). We use the small dose of 10 mg twice daily. This dose is small enough that we do not have to check lithium levels as is necessitated with large doses of lithium carbonate used by psychiatrists.

The use of amino acids

Picture
These are the molecules derived from proteins. Our body is constructed of 22 amino acids; eight of them cannot be made in humans (the essential amino acids). Amino acids are used by the body in three ways: they compromise the structure of our body in the form of proteins and enzymes. Secondly, some of them are converted into neurotransmitters. Lastly they can be converted into energy and thus balance blood sugar. They can be used singly or as mixtures.

Glutamine – this amino acid serves as the principal fuel source of the cells that line are intestinal tract and can also be easily converted into glucose to maintain blood sugar and energy. It can also be converted into the
neurotransmitter GABA which calms the central nervous system. Glutamine may be used as capsules or powder at the dose of 1000 to 3000 mg three times daily.

Glycine – works in a similar way to glutamine and is itself a relaxant neurotransmitter in the brain. The dose is 500 to 1000 mg three times daily between meals.

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) – these are essential amino acids which are structural building blocks of all tissues. They are also sources of energy when blood sugar falls.

Balanced amino acids – these can be used as an extra source of fully utilizable protein precursors for rebuilding the glands etc. as well as an energy source.

Taurine- Another neurotransmitter in its own right and is very good to stop anxiety. It is a sulfur amino acid and thus will help in detoxification, allergies and inflammation. It is an extremely versatile supplement. Dose 1000 mg three or four times per day. It is non-toxic so you can adjust the dose upward as needed.

Theanine- An amino acid found in green tea. It is a great help for anxiety and sleep problems.
