Many people know they react to pollen, animal dander or musty basements. They generally experience runny noses, congested sinuses or wheezing. Some get itchy rashes.
At Waters Center, we have come to understand “allergy” in a much broader sense. Our definition of allergy is “any inappropriate or excessive reaction to a food, chemical or even natural substances in the patient’s environment.” Basically, the body is reacting as if it is being attacked and the symptoms the patient experiences are caused by activation of immune cells and antibody release. Allergy is basically a mistaken reaction to something the body sees as a threat. The substance which initiates the attack could even be a body protein. In that case, the result is an autoimmune disease. Allergy and autoimmunity are very similar phenomena and sometimes exist simultaneously.
With a broader understanding of allergy, we can think of it more as inappropriate environmental reactivity and the symptoms may NOT be limited to the respiratory tract or skin. Our experience (in both ourselves and numerous patients) has demonstrated that ANY symptom can appear as a result of our immune system reacting to a foreign substance. These symptoms can include: headache, joint pain, muscle aches, depression, brain fog, upset stomach, colitis/irritable bowel syndrome and many strange and inexplicable symptoms.
We have treated patients for sinus congestion and were happily surprised when the patient state their energy increased or certain pains disappeared.
It is our experience and belief that we live in a world with thousands of newly synthesized substances, altered food proteins, various airborn particulates and electromagnetic frequencies that none of us experienced until the last century. All of this has resulted in what I call “Immunoconfusion.”
Traditional allergy treatment can be very intense: numerous skin tests and then injections one or more times per week. This can last for years and the person might be having reactions to material for which they weren’t tested.
A few years ago, we learned about and adopted a simple and effective system of allergy treatment. It was developed in England in the 1960’s and brought to the US in 1990. It is called LDA (Low Dose Antigen) therapy. It uses a large number of antigens from both foods and substances in the environment.
The foods were chosen to include all potential antigens including “superantigens” contained in foods not obviously related to one another, as an example birch pollen and peaches. A person may not have a known reaction to either birch or peach, but if they eat a peach during birch pollen season, they experience symptoms.
The environmental mix is also comprehensive. It contains the typical allergens such as grass and tree pollen, cat, dog, horse, etc. dander, mites et al but also a variety of mold and yeast mixtures that have been used by innovative allergists since the 1930’s.
This approach is to “cover the bases” so the total load of reactive substances is addressed.
Another unique aspect of this therapy is the concentration of the allergens. They are thousands of times more dilute than the ones used by orthodox allergists. This makes them totally safe. There isn’t a single report of anaphylaxis or death from LDA treatment. That can not be said for standard treatment.
Finally, the frequency of administration of the preparations isn’t weekly, it is bi-monthly. Experience over more than 50 years has shown that the treatment is most effective if it is given 8 weeks apart and definitely not less than 7 weeks apart. It can be give with a tiny needle into the skin of the forearm or under the tongue.
Unlike what is thought to be the underlying mechanistic effect of the high dose allergy treatment, the creation over time of neutralized antibodies to ones in the patient’s body that are causing the havoc; LDA is thought to work at the level of T-Regulatory Lymphocytes. This population of cells dampens the activity of the cells that are orchestrating the reactivity.
There is a variant of LDA therapy that employs antigens prepared from bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi that can be causing inappropriate immune reactions due to cross reactivity of proteins in the microbe with the patients self-proteins. This therapy is called LDI (Low Dose Immunotherapy) and is used for autoimmune diseases and other autoimmune processes. We are learning that every disease from osteoporosis to degenerative neurological diseases to even osteoarthritis has an autoimmune component.
This simple, safe therapy can alleviate one of the principle causes of ill health – food and environmental reactivity.

Tailored to you.We look at symptoms and complaints, your medical history, your family history, your diet and your lifestyle. He gets to the bottom of the issues, not just treat the symptoms. We don’t get too hung up on “diagnoses” but rather work on restoring health. He also looks extensively at diet and digestion as a basis to most medical issues; we promote a low carb, grain-free, sugar-free diet with focus on eating real food, limited processed food.
When a new patient comes to see Dr. Waters for the first time, he does a history, physical and consultation that lasts about 1½ hour, and included in your consult is a session with our structural therapist for about 30 minutes. We require a series of laboratory testing that includes lipids, liver/kidney functions, electrolytes, iron status, blood sugar status, urinalysis, in-depth thyroid function, vitamin D level, DHEA, cortisol level and mineral analysis. There will be additional tests needed based on what he finds during the consultation, such as hormones, heavy metals, digestive analysis, cardiac analysis, Lyme testing, anti-aging marker, etc. (these are done on an as-needed basis). Read more about our comprehensive laboratory testing here. Treatment plans are individualized for each patient. There will be specific diet changes, nutritional supplements, sometimes prescription medications and IV treatments and/or Low Dose Antigen Therapy depending on the findings. Treatments will be explained and quoted after he writes the order. |
It works.Would you like a FREE evaluation? If you decide you would like to make an appointment, we would like you to have your recent medical records and our medical questionnaire filled out and mailed back to us for Dr. Waters to review. He will then give us the okay to schedule your first appointment. |
