Women's Health Pathway

Picture
We have paid a huge price for all of the “advances” we have made in chemistry with the intention of making our lives easier. Synthesis of endocrine altering industrial chemicals and drugs have created an ongoing experiment on human beings over the last century. Plasticizers, pesticides, estrogenic compounds used in birth control pills, etc. and literally 100’s of other substances are altering our gland functions. This is particularly important in understanding healthcare for Women.
When I first learned of PMS back in the early 1980’s, I wondered why some women had so many symptoms referable to their menstrual cycle and, just as importantly, why many women have a terrible time going through menopause. At the time, I asked my 80-year-old female patients (who had been born and developed before the chemical storm that stared to whirl after the 1920’s) whether they had symptoms starting at their midcycle and whether menopause was a very challenging time for them. Their reply was that their periods were regular and, while they might have been a little out of sorts for a few days a month before their menses, they didn’t suffer from severe anxiety, anger, depression, horrible cramps, excessive bleeding, headache and many other symptoms women now report are consistent with their periods. As to menopause, these ladies told me that they realized after missing two or three periods that “well, that time of my life had passed.” No hot flashes, vaginal dryness, brain fog, etc.
This background informed me in helping women with symptoms related to the monthly menstrual cycle- the most important cycle in Nature as it is the basis of the continuation of humanity. It shouldn’t be so difficult, nor should its discontinuation.
There is an epidemic of female cyclic disorders and even pathological pelvic structural changes that have appeared and accelerated in frequency over the past decades.
The symptoms of female endocrine malfunction include PMS, low libido, vaginal dryness, irregular cycles, anxiety, brain fog, fatigue, severe menstrual cramps and excessive bleeding. More and more, anatomical changes developed in the female genitourinary track. These include PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), Endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts and, increasingly, infertility. The treatment of the later has developed into a multibillion dollar industry. There is also an epidemic of breast cancer which is related to more factors.
At the Waters Center, we have stepped back and asked, in view of what is known of the female reproductive system, what has happened to create a literal epidemic of menstrual, reproductive and genitourinary disorders and syndromes.
I can say with certainly that these disorders are related to modern, processed food and its contribution to insulin resistance, which is at the basis of so many female issues from obesity to infertility. A more detailed analysis reveals that these problems are associated with deficiencies of nutrients like magnesium, zinc, essential fatty acids and plant-derived pigments such as polyphenols and bioflavonoids.
All these changes exist with the background of endocrine disrupting chemicals that all of us breathe or ingest every day and to which our babies are exposed in utero from conception.
Now that I have explained the sad reality of modern reproductive ecology, I can confidently state that there are answers to these female medical issues.
Our focus is on three clinical areas:
  1. Disorders during menstrual life
  2. Problems occurring with menopause
  3. Infertility
The scientific bases of understanding and treating these problems are well documented in the scientific literature. Unfortunately, standard treatment doesn’t address them. Birth control pills and fertility have caused and contribute further to the problems. Environmental intoxication with endocrine disruptive chemicals are a large causative component of these modern aberrations. And nutritional deficiencies, immunological and inflammatory status must be addressed.
Through a thorough birth to present life history, physical exam, and focused laboratory analysis, we will unwind the biological reasons for the symptoms and disorders each woman presents at her consultation.
We look at the various phases of a woman’s reproductive life as a continuum. An example is the relationship between mineral deficiency in early life and presence of osteoporosis after menopause.
Interaction between adrenal and thyroid function and the female hormones estradiol, estriol and progesterone can be the actual basis of menstrual, menopausal and fertility issues.
Menstruation and menopause should not be considered “diseases.” Infertility was never a problem at the scale historically that it is today.
We cannot approach these issues with drugs. That is fool hardy.
Discover what isn’t working in the women’s biology will unlock what needs to correct it and give that woman a healthy life whatever her age.
Note, for families experiencing infertility, our work with Insulin Resistance Syndrome informs the understanding of the male’s biochemical issues contributing to the problem. We are able to work with couples to assist them in achieving pregnancy and a positive outcome – a health baby.

Tailored to you.

We look at symptoms and complaints, your medical history, your family history, your diet and your lifestyle.  He gets to the bottom of the issues, not just treat the symptoms.  We don’t get too hung up on “diagnoses” but rather work on restoring health. He also looks extensively at diet and digestion as a basis to most medical issues; we promote a low carb, grain-free, sugar-free diet with focus on eating real food, limited processed food.

When a new patient comes to see Dr. Waters for the first time, he does a history, physical and consultation that lasts about 1½ hour, and included in your consult is a session with our structural therapist for about 30 minutes.  We require a series of laboratory testing that includes lipids, liver/kidney functions, electrolytes, iron status, blood sugar status, urinalysis, in-depth thyroid function, vitamin D level, DHEA, cortisol level and mineral analysis.  There will be additional tests needed based on what he finds during the consultation, such as hormones, heavy metals, digestive analysis, cardiac analysis, Lyme testing, anti-aging marker, etc. (these are done on an as-needed basis). Read more about our comprehensive laboratory testing here.

Treatment plans are individualized for each patient.  There will be specific diet changes, nutritional supplements, sometimes prescription medications and possibly IV treatments and/or Low Dose Antigen Therapy depending on the findings. Treatments will be explained and quoted after he writes the order.

It works.
