Cardio Pathway

Picture
Over half of adult Americans are said to either be prediabetic or overtly diabetic. A more accurate description of this process (no, it isn’t a disease, it is a group of imbalances) is “Insulin Resistance Syndrome.”
This means that because of a diet too filled with processed carbohydrate foods, shortages of a number of essential vitamins, minerals and Omega-3 fatty acids, accumulation of toxic metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic (among others), and even an overload of iron in your cells and, finally, lack of movement (I hate to call it exercise); you have too much sugar, fats and insulin in your blood stream and cells, and they are causing inflammation in your tiny arteries. Over time the larger arteries are affected as a result and one day, stroke or heart attack occurs. Half of the time, the first sign of trouble is sudden death!
It doesn’t have to be this way. The biochemistry of heart disease and diabetic complications are well understood by science. There are five areas of disturbed function in which we can intervene and reverse the processes that produce the damage in metabolic disease.
First, calcium is needed for numerous cellular functions. From firing our brain cells to transmitting hormonal and other signals across cell membranes, calcium is the central player. However, it is a double-edged sword. When it enters a cell or a subcellular compartment and performs its functions for a biological process, it must be sent back across the membrane by various pumps. In a very real way, it is the accumulation of calcium beyond what is needed for health, that sits at the very center of aging and eventually death. Calcium causes constriction of blood vessels for example, and magnesium dilates them. If tiny arteries are not able to expand and contract as needed to maintain blood flow at an optimum, the tissue supplied by the blood vessels loses its nutritional inputs and accumulates toxins. It is one of the reasons prediabetics and overtly diabetic patients suffer from blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, neuropathies, strokes and even gangrene of the extremities. Sir William Osler said, “You are as old as your arteries.” And if we can use one way to describe diabetes, it is the best example of accelerated aging.
Secondly, even slightly elevated blood sugar causes damage to body proteins. It does this by a process known as glycosylation. This can be measured via the blood test A1C Hemoglobin; the higher the level, the worse the complications of insulin resistance. Most MD’s use 7% as the target in managing blood sugar problems. They are permitting their patients to accumulate damage to every cell of their body. We work to get this number below 5.5%.
Third, while we can’t live without insulin, too much is a principle cause of the damage caused by high blood sugar. High levels of insulin cause inflammation in the microvascular system. Every time we eat carbohydrate foods, especially concentrated, processed kinds, our blood sugar rises and more insulin is secreted by the pancreas to usher the sugar into the cells. Over time, the cells become resistant to insulin and the blood sugar rises and damage to proteins ensues.
Fourth, toxic metals and excess iron accumulates in our tissue starting in our fetal life. These metals push out essential elements like zinc, from important enzymes causing a decrease in their activity. They also cause increased production of free radicals – the reactive molecules that cause the actual damage to the lipid membranes, proteins and genetic material.
Fifth, and this goes to the very heart of the aging process in general, Magnesium EDTA Chelation Therapy corrects the excessive entry of calcium into cells and subcellular membranes by actually lowering calcium during treatment. This results in a compensatory response by the parathyroid glands. These tiny glands imbedded in or near the thyroid gland in the neck, produce a hormone known as PTH (parathyroid hormone). Its job is to bring calcium back up into a physiological range. There is evidence that PTH gets this calcium from inappropriate deposits in the soft tissues – arteries, joints, heart valves, tendons, etc. Even better, the increased PTH appears to promote calcium’s deposition into bones. In fact, there is an FDA approved analogue of PTH being used to treat osteoporosis. Human and animal studies have demonstrated an increase in bone density after a series of Magnesium EDTA Chelation therapy – but only in people who started with a low bone density. An added benefit is the large dose of magnesium that is infused with the treatment. ALL cardiovascular and diabetic patients are deficient in magnesium.
In short, we correct the elevated blood sugar, elevated insulin, toxic metal and iron accumulation and the free radical damage underlying damage to the blood vessels through three simultaneous interventions:
  1. Changes in diet and lifestyle.
  2. Correction of endocrine hormone imbalances and nutritional deficiencies.
  3. Intravenous Magnesium EDTA Chelation
Chelation has been documented in a large Federal study to improve the outcome of patients who already suffered a heart attack. In the case of prediabetes and diabetes, my experience over the past  35 years allows me to confidently state that more than 90% of patients with blood sugar (and thus circulatory) issues, will improve by undergoing a series of Chelation infusions.
Our methods represent the highest level of “Anti-aging” medicine in the Midwest.

Tailored to you.

We look at symptoms and complaints, your medical history, your family history, your diet and your lifestyle.  He gets to the bottom of the issues, not just treat the symptoms.  We don’t get too hung up on “diagnoses” but rather work on restoring health. He also looks extensively at diet and digestion as a basis to most medical issues; we promote a low carb, grain-free, sugar-free diet with focus on eating real food, limited processed food.

When a new patient comes to see Dr. Waters for the first time, he does a history, physical and consultation that lasts about 1½ hour, and included in your consult is a session with our structural therapist for about 30 minutes.  We require a series of laboratory testing that includes lipids, liver/kidney functions, electrolytes, iron status, blood sugar status, urinalysis, in-depth thyroid function, vitamin D level, DHEA, cortisol level and mineral analysis.  There will be additional tests needed based on what he finds during the consultation, such as hormones, heavy metals, digestive analysis, cardiac analysis, Lyme testing, anti-aging marker, etc. (these are done on an as-needed basis). Read more about our comprehensive laboratory testing here.

Treatment plans are individualized for each patient.  There will be specific diet changes, nutritional supplements, sometimes prescription medications and possibly IV treatments and/or Low Dose Antigen Therapy depending on the findings. Treatments will be explained and quoted after he writes the order.

It works.
